This labour day weekend marks the beginning of this blog and my "labour" of love. I plan to entertain you with stories, creative ideas and the trials and joys here at Chickadee Acres, my home and the heart of Seasonal Expressions an enterprising adventure and part of following my bliss.

I've always loved chickadees for their gentle, friendly nature and sweet song.  For years I’ve been hand feeding them at hiking trails in Ottawa greenbelt trails. It was my escape. Therefore it's no surprise once I moved to the country that I was thrilled to discover them here! It was only fitting to name this country acreage after them. To keep them around the property I've acquired over time several stocked feeders and have even planted a mini evergreen forest in a nearby meadow to ensure more will come in the future. Persistence and patience have rewarded me with some bolder chickadees perching briefly in my hand for a sample of sunflower seeds. It's a thrilling yet humbling experience all at once. I find it interesting how a simple validating event as this can make my day. An ego boost ? Absolutely! Yet I feel a surge of love from deep within when I interact with these little creatures. They bring out my true nature, my inner spirit. Is it any wonder I crave the solace of the great mother herself?

Country living has always appealed to me despite my city roots. Going back to my childhood I fondly recall visits to my godparent’s country bungalow where “mon oncle" Henri (uncle  pronounced "mononk") raised honey bees and sold produce on the side of the road. To this day the taste and aroma of raspberries or beeswax remind me of him. I realized recently that I'm attempting to recapture those times for it was then when I fell in love with nature and all it offered. By growing large patches of vegetables and acquiring my own beehive I've returned to glimspe those golden moments again and find a simpler way of life. That was three years ago and I’ve yet to collect honey and discovered there's nothing "simple" about  country living which is fodder for another blog.

Chickadee acres is a sprawling 25 acres of meadows, wet lands and forested property in the heart of Leeds and Grenville county. I saw the potential of this fixer upper bungalow with its crooked stables, drafty equipment barn and dilapidated chicken coop hiding surprising secrets (another blog). There was plenty of storage space for supplies and I could collect and grow my own materials for whatever strikes my fancy from twig furniture to dried flowers. A place where I can return to my roots, my authentic self, become self sufficient and live off the land as so many of you out there dream of. More importantly this natural environment full of community minded people is the perfect location for inspiration and food not only for the body but for the soul.

Won't you join me as I  share my adventures  to perhaps enlighten and inspire you along your own personal journey?

With Love,
Rolande
